Fracking is opposed by various United Nations committees, numerous well-respected conservation organisations, academics and hundreds of concerned local community groups. It is clear that fracking and an onshore oil and gas industry is irreconcilable with the UK Parliament’s declaration of a climate change emergency.
Fracking is now subject to moratorium or effective bans in many other countries and states around the world and now, just before the 2019 election, the UK Government placed a moratorium on fracking in England. In the government’s own polling this year, support for fracking by the British public stands at only 11%.
The definition of fracking should be simple, consistent and without constraints about the volumes of fluid used. So what will the moratorium actually cover?
We call for an immediate BAN of fracking and all onshore unconventional oil and gas exploration and production, including coal bed methane and acid stimulation
We believe that continuing to develop a new onshore oil and gas industry in the UK will result in unacceptable negative impacts on the climate, public health, the environment, local communities and the economy.
The greenhouse gas emissions resulting from any new onshore oil and gas exploration and production will increase climate change at a time when the UK needs to be investing heavily in clean renewable energy and moving rapidly towards a low-carbon economy.
We have signed up
thousands of supporters, numerous politicians, academics and groups to pressure the government to stop fracking in all its forms. Now it's time to ask MP Candidates to back our call to ban fracking in the UK.
We believe that to prevent fracking in the UK we must work together to put fracking and associated forms of extreme energy extraction on the political agenda.
Help us to take call to halt fracking to the corridors of power. By developing an extensive network of communities, campaigners and politicians, information can be shared quickly to keep you up to date with the issue and share joint actions.
01Sign up politicians
Join the ever growing call to ban fracking. The one simple requirement that politicians will need to fulfil in order to receive our backing is for them to support our pledge to oppose fracking.
Political pledge:
‘‘If my constituency, division or ward is at risk of fracking, I will actively oppose it. If my constituency is not at risk, I will oppose fracking nationwide.’’
We can work with you to put into place campaigns to help you to oppose fracking in your area and connect you with local campaign groups.
In the majority of areas under threat from fracking blocks it is becoming clear that to stop fracking we have to change the minds of those in power who decide, or change the people who make the decisions.
Supporter pledge to candidates:
"We will endorse, promote and support politicians and candidates who pledge to stand against fracking."
